On 6 June 2024, the ZEIDES Business Breakfast took place in Ljubljana, organized by Palsit and the EIDES Association. The main topic of the meeting was the challenges arising from the new eIDAS 2.0 regulation.
The eIDAS 2.0 regulation introduces a number of changes and innovations in the field of electronic identification and trust services to enable and facilitate public and private entities and individuals in the European Union to exercise their right to participate in the digital society in a secure and trustworthy way.
Among the electronic identification solutions and services in the renewed Regulation, the regulation of the issuance of a European Digital Identity Wallet stands out, as well as the electronic archiving of electronic data and documents, the remote management of electronic signature or electronic seal creation devices, the issuance and validation of electronic attribute certificates and the recording of electronic data in an electronic register (ledger) among the 14 trust services.
The participants also discussed the time and complexity involved in setting up the entire ecosystem of this new wallet and the challenges faced by all service providers in the public and private sectors who are required by the regulation to recognize this new means of electronic identification. The first wallets are expected by the end of 2026. By then, all legal and technical requirements must be in place to enable the use of the wallet throughout the EU.
